HOMILY HOMILY SATURDAY OF THE THIRTY-THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

THE REVOLT (PART 3)

1 Maccabees 6:1–13; Psalm 9; Luke 20:27–40

The events surrounding King Antiochus IV Epiphanes and his military expeditions are given to us in the first reading. This addresses the issues of his military campaigns. Due to military difficulties, Antiochus IV makes the decision to go back to Persia in order to assemble more men and supplies for his wars.

Again, the reading captures Antiochus’s expression of frustration and agony at recognizing his intentions have failed and that he will have difficulty retaining control of the Seleucid Empire.

Antiochus became more distressed, astounded, and badly shaken when he heard that Jerusalem had been freed by Judas Maccabeus and the Temple had been rededicated. Eventually, he took to his bed and became sick from grief because things did not go as he had planned. He lamented bitterly and died. Beloved, power fails; wealth fails, but a good life is eternal. Let us aim to live a good life.

Conclusively, in the Gospel, Jesus makes us understand that marriage is not destined to exceed earthly existence. Most of the things we kill ourselves for do not exceed this present life. LIVING A GOOD LIFE IS THE BEST REVOLT OF A CHRISTIAN IN THIS GENERATION. Children of the resurrection are neither married nor given in marriage. As Christians, regardless of our secular or religious status, let us live a good life so that we can make heaven.

Let us pray.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.
