Be on your guard
Daniel 7:15–27; Psalm 3:82–87; Luke 21:34–36
Today is the last day of the liturgical year; the first Sunday of Advent begins tomorrow. May the new season bring us fresh zeal and grace. This last day, let us equally heed the encouragement and warnings of Jesus.
He said to his disciples, “Be on your guard; let not your hearts be weighed down with a life of pleasure, drunkenness, and worldly cares, lest that day catch you suddenly as a trap.” Christ wants us to avoid excess and depression due to life care. Cares are part of life; being overwhelmed by them can distract from spiritual priorities.
Jesus also mentions a “day” that will arrive suddenly. This might refer to a number of important events, such as the final judgment or individual trials. Either way, the key is to be ready for unexpected challenges. Therefore, it is important to stay watchful and prayerful, prioritizing spiritual readiness for the challenges that might come.
Beloved, we must be careful to avoid being tricked or getting into a precarious situation that will disqualify us on the last day. Daniel reminds us in the first reading that we have become a line of kings to further the purpose of creation. Therefore, let us behave as noble children of God.
Let us pray.
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.
