Humility for mystery
Isaiah 11:1-10, 11-14; Psalm 72; Luke 10:21-24
Isaiah speaks of an offspring of Jesse who will be king and who will rule with God’s blessing. In his reign, there will be peace and prosperity. On him shall rest the Spirit of the Lord, who will bring him wisdom and insight, counsel and power, knowledge, and fear of the Lord. Justice shall flourish in his days!
Jesus is the fulfillment of this prophecy. Luke’s Gospel affirms this: “Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, said everything has been entrusted to me by the Father and that the only way to know the Father is through the Son.”
Therefore, if we must express justice, peace, and prosperity, we must know Jesus. If we don’t know him, we cannot know the Father and his purpose for us. Knowledge of Christ demands intellectual and spiritual humility, for he reveals himself to little children rather than the proud. Humility uncovers mystery.
Summarily, today’s gospel highlights the importance of humility, receptivity, and childlike faith in understanding the mysteries of God’s kingdom. We too have been granted this privilege by the many spiritual assets around us.
Let us pray.
Look with favor, Lord God, on our petitions, and in our trials, grant us your compassionate help, that, consoled by the presence of your Son, whose coming we now await, we may be tainted no longer by the corruption of former ways. through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
