HOMILY FOR FRIDAY, THE FIFTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

Care for the disabled

1 Kings 11:29-32, 12:19; Psalm 80; Mark 7:31-37

The Gospel says, “They brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech, and they asked him to lay his hand on him.” Those who brought the deaf and dumb man to Jesus represent those who truly care for people with disabilities.

How often do we care for those with disabilities? We know their temperaments, but most times we still go all out to frustrate them. The disabled in the gospel reading were shown love. Love and care can enable the disabled. Where there is love and care, miracles abound.

The first reading highlights the themes of divine sovereignty, accountability, the consequences of disobedience, and God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises. It serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of obedience and faithfulness in leadership and the enduring nature of God’s plans and promises.

Let us pray

Almighty Father, unblock our ears so that we may listen to your word. Open our hearts so that we may grow in sensitivity to the plight of others. Release our tongues so that we may speak in gratitude for your loving kindness. Amen.
