HOMILY FOR MONDAY, THE FIRST WEEK OF LENT

The separation of the sheep from the goats is a parable that exhorts Christians to take action to help those in need. Jesus says, “Truly, I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Do you believe this?Β

We must learn to help those in need; we must learn to treat people with respect, irrespective of their religious or social status. The first reading reiterated this saying: β€œYou shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning” (Lev. 19:13).Β

What is our attitude toward our neighbors? How do we treat our workers? Is the 2023 presidential election a reflection of the minds of the electorate? It is not enough to fast and pray; we must equally improve our attitude towards others. If we do not change, at the final separation of the sheep from the goats, God will distinguish between good and bad individuals.Β

Let us pray.

Convert us, O God, our Savior, and instruct our minds by heavenly teaching so that we may benefit from the works of Lent. Amen.
