THE CHAIR OF ST. PETER, APOSTLE
1 Peter 5:1-4; PSALM 23; Matthew 16:13–19
Today the church celebrates the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, also known as the Throne of Saint Peter. The “chair” symbolizes the authority of St. Peter and his successors (the Pope). Peter lived and worked in Capernaum as a fisherman when Jesus called him to be his apostle and bestowed on him a special role among the apostles.
Today’s gospel shows that he was appointed as leader of Christ’s church following his great proclamation of faith in Christ. Maturity of faith is necessary in choosing church leaders. He implores all elders in 1 Peter 5:1-4 to be true shepherds to those entrusted to them. Thus, spiritual leaders are further challenged to live exemplary lives and care for the flock of God under their watch.
This celebration of the Chair of St. Peter is an implicit assurance that the Church of Jesus has not changed and that the truth and teaching of the Church are not compromised. It also reawakens confidence in the oneness of truth and faith in any particular church.
However, in the face of scandalous lapses, the psalm of today reassures us that the Lord is the true shepherd. Therefore, while we continue to obey the authority of the church, we must not forget to look up to Jesus as the true shepherd.
Today, the Catholic Diocese of Auchi marks the 21st anniversary of the Episcopal Ordination of Most Revd. (Dr.) Gabriel Dunia. ‘Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown’. Congratulations to our Bishop, and may all bishops continue to find strength and grace to fulfill the Lord’s will. Amen.
Let us pray.
Grant, we pray, almighty God, that no tempests may disturb us, for you have set us fast on the rock of the Apostle Peter’s confession of faith. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
