HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY IN THE OCTAVE OF EASTER 2024

Revelation through the Eucharist

Acts 3:1–10; Psalm 105; Luke 24:13–35

“They recognized him at the breaking of bread” (Luke 24:30–31). This statement shows the paramount place of the Eucharist in the lives of the disciples. The same applies to us today. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1324–1327) states that the Eucharist is “the source and summit” of the Christian life. But if we don’t believe, we can’t experience this grace.

Jesus himself left us with this responsibility when he said, “Do this in memory of me” (Luke 22:19). This statement implies action, mission, continuity, tradition, and an affectionate memory.

The disciples’ eyes were opened, and they recognized Jesus in the breaking of bread. At the breaking of bread, our cold hearts begin to burn, our blind eyes are opened, our insight is deepened, our knowledge broadened, and our souls are filled with grace, peace, and joy. Without such insight, we cannot discern the presence of Christ in our everyday experiences.

Therefore, strengthened by the grace of the Holy Eucharist, like the two disciples of Emmaus, let us rise with all enthusiasm and liveliness. Like Peter and the other disciples in the first reading, let us go forth to proclaim the risen Christ.

Let us pray

O God, who gladdens us year by year with the solemnity of the Lord’s Resurrection, graciously grant that, by celebrating these present festivities, we may merit through them to reach eternal joys. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
