HOMILY FOR THURSDAY, THE SEVENTH WEEK OF EASTER YEAR

Unity in diversity

ACTS 22:30, 23:6–11; PSALM 16; JOHN 17:20–26

The gospel presents us with the high priestly prayer of Jesus Christ. It emphasizes unity, oneness with God, glory, love, eternal life, and sanctification. Let’s highlight two of these themes briefly.

While unity demands that we relate with love despite our differences, oneness with God is a function of our relationship with God and our obedience to His commands (John 17:21–23).

Again, unity is not uniformity, but unity in diversity. By embracing “unity in diversity,” the Catholic Church aims to create a rich tapestry of faith where diverse threads are woven together in a beautiful and harmonious whole. The beauty of the choir is the harmony of the various voices.

Unity begins with “U.”. What is your contribution towards unity in your family, office, school, community, and nation? Let us stand for the truth despite the trials in the city.

In the first reading, Paul manifested this divine strength while he faced trial in Jerusalem. He was arrested, yet he did not give up on preaching the gospel.

After his release, he was told, in a vision, to go to Rome to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. By the strength of Christ, Paul remained steadfast (Phil. 4:13). Don’t give up your faith because of trials. James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

Let us pray.

May your Spirit, O Lord, we pray, imbue us powerfully with spiritual gifts, that he may give us a mind pleasing to you and graciously conform us to your will. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
