HOMILY FOR THURSDAY, THE EIGHTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

Bartimaeus narrative

1 Peter 2:2–5, 9–12; Psalm 99; Mark 10:46–52

Mark 10:46–52 presents us with the story of Bartimaeus, a blind beggar who was healed by Jesus. The Bartimaeus narrative teaches us persistence and determination. Despite the pressure against him, he persistently sought Jesus. Beyond all odds, we must continue to seek Jesus.

Bartimaeus did not allow the obstacles around him to suppress his praying voice. We, too, must be strong. Don’t allow the obstacles of life to suppress your praying spirit.

Bartimaeus also expresses simplicity and submission. The Bible says, “Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus” (Mark 10:50). He humbled himself, threw away his formal ways, and submitted to Jesus. We must let go of our former lives and submit to Jesus. We must learn to resist the devil and submit to Jesus (James 4:7).

In the first reading, St. Peter exhorts us to believe and act as children of God. We must set ourselves close to Christ and always act honorably among those who denounce us. Our action speaks volumes.

Let us pray.

Almighty Father, hear our cry and deliver us. Give us the grace to navigate life and situations and come to the victory declared by your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen
