The Golden Rule
2 Kings 19:9-11, 14-21, 31-36; Psalm 48; Matthew 7:6, 12-14
In our first reading, we are presented with Hezekiah’s prayer. When the letter to denounce and overtake the kingdom was given to Hezekiah, the Bible says that Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord, and he was delivered. The Lord is ready to defend those who call on him in faith and trust.
When faced with trials, who will run? Hezekiah’s consultation of the prophetic scroll (2 Kings 19:14) highlights the importance of scripture in decision-making.When we resort to the Lord, we get the best result.
Today’s gospel presents us with the Golden Rule. The rules say, “Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for this is the law and the prophets.” Treat others as you want them to treat you. Our actions towards others will be reciprocated by God (Matt. 7:12). Treat people with kindness and respect.
Prayer
Father, have mercy moments. We loved things more than men. Help us to always demonstrate your love for others instead of getting sucked into pointless and senseless arguments. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
