HOMILY FOR TUESDAY, THE FOURTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR II

True Labourers

Hosea 8:4–7, 11–13; Psalm 114; Matthew 9:32–38

The Pharisees said, ‘It is through the prince of devils that he casts out devils.’ Jesus was not distracted by this statement; rather, he remained steadfast and invited us all to be labourers in his vineyard. Are we distracted by present-day mockeries and ridicules? Are we true labourers or destroyers? Are we co-workers or “co-mockers?” What kind of labourers are we in the Lord’s vineyard?

Again, the gospel noted that “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” True labourers are compassionate. It’s commonly said, “If you can’t feel it, you can’t help it.” If you can’t feel the plight of the people, you can’t actually help their situation. True labourers are passionate and compassionate.

The first reading tells us that despite God’s love for his people, they continued to spurn him. Prophet Hosea recounts their sins and how they abused God’s altars and created false idols for themselves. The true labourers let us cooperate with God’s work for our salvation.

Prayer

Lord, teach me and help me to learn. When I snap at those who hurt me with their ridicule, those who misunderstand or hinder me with some misguided helpfulness, those who intrude upon my privacy, then help me curb my tongue. May gentleness become my cloak. Amen.
