HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY THE SEVENTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

The Greatest Treasure

Jer. 15:10.16-22 Ps. 59 MATTHEW 13:44-46

Speaking on treasure Jesus gives us the parable of the hidden treasure and the fine pearl in the gospel reading. He says, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field that someone has found; he hides it again, goes off happy, sells everything he owns, and buys the field. ‘ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls; when he finds one of great value, he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it.’” Beloved, the kingdom of God remains the greatest treasure; whoever discovers this fact must renounce the world to attain it.

St Ignatius of Loyola, whose memorial we celebrate today, calls us to be open to God’s word through a 30-day retreat popularly called Ignatian retreat. This retreat is designed for four weeks; each week with a basic goal. Week one: to “reform the deformed”— Week two: to “conform the reformed”—Week three: to “confirm the conformed”—Week four: to “transform the confirmed”. Beloved, are we deformed spiritually, psychologically or emotionally? Are we crippled by guilt, fear and shame? Kindly seek help and meet your spiritual director. If we are open to God’s word and abide by his instructions for at least 30 days we shall experience transformation.

When we connect with God in prayer, we experience transformation. Like Moses our spirit is so electrified in prayer that no darkness can withstand its radiance. The greatest treasure on earth is not the riches or silver, but God’s presence.

LET US PRAY

Father, teach us to value the place of prayer over and above other desires. Teach us to radiate your presence wherever we go and help us to conquer all that wants to distract us from your kingdom. Amen
