Guardian Angels
Job 9:1-13,14-16, Ps. 88, Mt. 18:1-5,10
Today, we celebrate the feast of the Guardian Angels, those heavenly companions entrusted with our care and protection. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that “from its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession” (CCC 336).
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus assures us, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). This verse reveals the intimate connection between our guardian angels and God.
The role of our guardian angels is threefold:
1. To protect us from harm: Psalm 91:11 says, “For He has given His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.”
2. To guide us toward goodness: Our guardian angels inspire us to make choices that lead us closer to God.
3. To pray for us: Revelation 8:3-4 describes angels offering our prayers to God.
Our guardian angels are: constant companions (Psalm 34:7), faithful protectors (Exodus 23:20–23), heavenly advocates (Job 33:23–24), and divine messengers (Luke 1:19, 26).
We can honour our guardian angels by acknowledging their presence, seeking their guidance, praying to them, and showing gratitude.
Prayer
Angel of God, my Guardian dear,
To whom His love commits me here,
Ever this day be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
