HOMILY FOR TUESDAY, THE TWENTY-SEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR II

The Good Portion

Galatians 1:13-24, Psalm 139, Luke 10:38-42

Today’s Gospel presents a poignant encounter between Jesus and the sisters Martha and Mary. While Martha was consumed by hospitality, Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet, absorbing His words. Jesus commended Mary, saying, “She has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.”

This narrative resonates with us today. Often, even in our liturgical services, we become distracted by various tasks and responsibilities. Church functionaries, wardens, choirs, instrumentalists, and altar servers may be so preoccupied that they neglect to listen to God’s word.

However, as Jesus reminds us, effective service stems from attentive listening. Unless we listen to Christ, we risk pursuing our own agendas, rather than God’s will.

St. Paul’s experience in the first reading illustrates this truth. Prior to his encounter with Christ, Paul was zealous in his own pursuits. May his transformation inspire us to surrender our will to God’s.

As we pray, let us echo the psalmist’s words: “Lord, not my will but your will be done.”

Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, guide our actions and align our conduct with your divine will. Amidst life’s distractions, grant us the grace to prioritize your word and your purpose. May our services be fruitful and pleasing to you. Amen.
