Living by the Spirit
Galatians 5:18-25, Psalm 1, Luke 11:42-46
Today’s reading from Galatians underscores the significance of our baptismal commitment to Christ, which necessitates crucifying the flesh with its passions. As baptized Christians, we are called to transcend our human inclinations toward comfort, pleasure, and sin. This requires a deliberate effort, facilitated by faith, discipline, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Saint Paul emphasizes that living according to the flesh leads to spiritual death, while surrendering to the Spirit yields life (Galatians 5:16-25, Romans 8:13). The Gospel account of the Pharisees serves as a cautionary tale, warning against prioritizing external religious observances over genuine love for God and justice.
Let us pray
Heavenly Father, fill us with the Holy Spirit, that we may conquer the deeds of the flesh. Grant us the grace to do your will through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
