THE SABBATH AND MAN
Hebrews 6:10-20; Psalm 112; Mark 2:23-28
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Jesus made this profound statement in response to the accusation raised by the Pharisees. For them, the disciples of Jesus were breaking the law of the Sabbath by plucking heads of grain. Jesus’ response shows that the Sabbath was intended to help, not hinder.
Beloved, there is more to Christianity than mere observance of the law of the Sabbath. The Catechism teaches us that works of necessity and mercy are lawful on a Sabbath day. It is right and just to save a life, even if it means sacrificing Sunday worship. One’s life is far more important than rituals. Remember the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Today the Church celebrates St. Agnes of Rome. She eaches us two valuable lessons:
1. Strive for purity of heart and remain faithful despite persecution.
2. Show courage in the face of adversity, standing firm in your faith.”
The Letter to the Hebrews reminds us, “God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones” (Heb 6:10). Man capitalizes on law; God maximizes love.
Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, help us and save us. May we remain steadfast and keep the faith sincerely. Amen.
