HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY OF THE SEVENTH WEEK OF EASTER

Farewell speeches

ACTS 20:28–38; PSALM 68; JOHN 17:11–19

Both readings today present us with the farewell speeches of Paul and Jesus Christ, respectively. Paul gave an emotional farewell to the Ephesian elders, encouraging them to guard the flock and warning them against false teachers (Acts 20:17-38).

Jesus in his farewell speech, prayed that his disciples should remain united, consecrated, and delivered from all evil (JOHN 17:11–19). This prayer is very effective in our lives, except for the sons of perdition—those who choose to derail. We are the Lord’s disciples. Let us be steadfast in faith, abstain from evil and be united. Of what relevance are our prayers and worship if we still fight ourselves?

Farewell speeches are a meaningful way to mark a significant transition. Jacob (Genesis 47:29-50:14), Moses (Deuteronomy 31-34), and Joshua (Joshua 23-24) all gave farewell speeches. Even David in (1 Samuel 23:1-7, 1 Chronicles 28-29) in farewell, advised his son Solomon to follow God’s commands and build the Temple.

Farewell speeches show respect, appreciation, gratitude, inspiration, motivation and blessing before departure. It offers valuable insights into the importance of leaving a lasting legacy, encouraging others, and entrusting them to God’s care.

Let us pray.

Graciously grant to your church, O merciful God, that, gathered by the Holy Spirit, she may be devoted to you with all her heart and united in purity of intent. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen
