HOMILY FOR SATURDAY, THE SEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

James’ Final Instructions

James 5:13–20; Psalm 141; Mark 10:13–16

Today we have come to the last part of James’ practical instructions. If you have been following this series, you will have realized the importance of actions along with faith. Our actions must cohere with our faith.

However, in this last passage, James leaves us with various instructions; they are: prayer; anointing of the sick; confession; and restoration of wanderers. What is our attitude towards these instructions?

Jesus wants us to accept these instructions like little children, and so he calls us to be childlike in the gospel. That means we should be humble, teachable, obedient, forgiving, and trustworthy.

Let us pray

Father, have mercy and save us. Help us to abide by your instructions so that we may not end up in destruction. By the power of the Holy Spirit, give us peace and save us from wickedness, hatred, violence, and war. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
