HOMILY FOR MONDAY THE EIGHT WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

Faith, regardless of condition

1 Peter 1:3–9; Psalm 110; Mark 10:17–27

In today’s first reading, we are introduced to the First Letter of St. Peter. The purpose of this letter is to encourage believers in the face of persecution and suffering.

What are you going through? Are you sick? Are you being persecuted? Do not be discouraged. Peter reminds us that our faith in Jesus will bring eternal gladness.

Unlike the rich man in the gospel reading, our faith must surpass riches. He went away sad simply because he was asked to sell all he had and give the money to the poor. Genuine faith is not determined by wealth or poverty. True faith exists regardless of both variables.

Let us pray

Father, have mercy and save us. Increase our faith that we may overcome the daily trials that come our way. Give us true and active faith, and may our world be directed by your peaceful rule so that we may rejoice untroubled. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
