Today’s readings present us with the life of St. John’s the Baptist. What is it about St. John the Baptist life? John was a Jewish prophet of priestly origin who preached the nearness of God’s Final Judgment and baptized those who repented in self-preparation for it; he is revered in the Christian church as the forerunner of Jesus and so the last of the prophets. The first reading was a prophetic biography of John; it tells us of the messenger who would prepare the way for the Lord. This messenger was formed in the womb to be the Lord’s servant and to be the light of the nations to guide many back to the Lord. This prophecy was fulfilled in John the Baptist. Again, in the second reading St. Paul further emphasized the background and mission of St. John the Baptist. The gospel recounts the birth and naming of St. John the Baptist. However, John tragically died because he corrected a king. This great saint has so many lessons for us as Christians today but I shall note only three.
We must know that God’s prophecy will surely come to pass; all that was said about John in the Old Testament was fulfilled years later. Matt. 24:35 says “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away”. Never take the words of scriptures for a joke.
God does the impossible to fulfill His purpose: Zacharias and Elizabeth, parents of John, were both from the priestly family of Aaron and were advanced in years. Elizabeth was barren but had a miraculous birth. Beloved, God usually work with barren women to give birth to a child whom He will use for His work. For example Hannah and her son Samuel, the wife of Manoah and her son Samson, all fulfilled the purpose of God. this working pattern continue to exist till date but most times our anxiety and worries make us to search for miracle birth in places that alter this divine plan. Be careful of what you do when you await child birth.
We must always be prepared: from the readings today, one of the primary missions of John was to prepare people for the coming of the Christ. This message of preparation continues today in our time. We must prepare for the second coming of our Lord. Keep us true Lord.
