HOMILY FOR SATURDAY THE ELEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

Worry

2 Chronicles 24:17–25; Psalm 89; Matthew 6:24–34

In the gospel, Jesus says, We cannot serve two masters. This is practically true. If we serve God faithfully and truly, we have no need to worry about anything. Most times, we are troubled because we are not faithful to God. Oftentimes, we suffer from the concomitant anxieties of our varied beliefs.

Lastly, Jesus adds, “Do not worry about tomorrow; your Father knows your needs.” Worrying is one of our most common and destructive daily habits. If we don’t control it, it controls us and endangers our health. If you treat every situation as a matter of life and death, you will die many times before your time.

In spite of the struggles, do not be hopeless. If we prayed as much as we worried, we’d have a lot less to worry about. Remember, faith ends where worry begins, and worry ends where faith begins. Don’t worry! Sorrow looks back, worry looks around, and faith looks up. Have faith!

In the first reading, Jehoiada, the priest, dies, and suddenly, the people abandon their faith. Zechariah, who spoke against this apostasy, was put to death. Eventually, the land was taken over by the Aramaeans. This narrative emphasises faithfulness to God.

PRAYER

Loving God, give us the grace to stay faithful to your covenant. Grant us peace of mind and calm our troubled hearts. Amen.
