Follow Jesus
Amos 2:6–10, 13–16; Psalm 50; Matthew 8:18–22
The Gospel invites us to follow Jesus. To follow Jesus is to keep his commandments, resist evil deeds, and endure discomforts, dissatisfactions, and insufficiencies. If we follow Jesus, surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives, and we shall dwell in God’s house forever.
God’s judgement on Israel’s people is pronounced through Prophet Amos, who warns against selling the righteous for silver (Amos 2:6, first reading). Let’s repent and abide by God’s word. If we do not repent, God’s judgement will come upon us.
Again, we must learn not to profane God’s holy name because of the trials we are going through. The people of Israel in Amos 2:7 disobeyed the Lord and profaned his holy name because they thought God had abandoned them. God has not abandoned us; do not be discouraged.
Let us pray
O God, who, through the grace of adoption, chose us to be children of light, grant, we pray, that we may not be wrapped in the darkness of error but always be seen to stand in the bright light of truth. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
