Necessary doubt
EPHESIANS 2:19-22; PSALM 117; JOHN 20:24-29
Today’s gospel highlights Thomas’ journey of faith, serving as a model for modern Christians to question their faith and seek understanding. In a time like this with many spiritual aberrations, Thomas doubt becomes a necessary doubt that saves us from gullible behaviour. 1 John 4:1 says “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
Thomas’ absence from the disciples’ gathering reveals his desire for loneliness because his expectations aren’t met. Some of us withdraw from fellowship due to unmet expectations. We must learn to purify our expectations; it’s not just about momentary appetite but salvation. There is power in fellowship; don’t be absent.
Lastly, Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you.” Jesus’ message of peace is crucial for our community and as individuals. Just as greetings of peace are emphasised in our liturgical celebrations, they should also be emphasised in our homes. Peace helps us to overcome unforgiveness, malice, envy, hatred, lies, and division.
Let us pray
Grant, almighty God, that we may glory in the feast of the blessed apostle Thomas, so that we may always be sustained by his intercession. Fill us with your life-giving grace through faith in your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
