Happy life
Isaiah 26:7-9, 12, 16-19; Psalm 102; Matthew 11:28-30
The first reading presents us with the conditions for a happy life or a troubled life. A happy life is determined by a righteous way of life, while a troubled life is caused by disobedience to God’s law. Precisely because of this, Jesus calls us to learn from him in the gospel. Jesus wants us to be gentle and humble so that we can find rest for our souls. Humility and gentility are criteria for a happy life.
Jesus went further to say, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matt 11:28). Another attribute of God is rest. Genesis 2:2 says, “On the seventh day, God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.”
Some of us are burdened because of work, others because of pride, and while there are those doing everything possible to cover up their evil deeds, it’s neurotic and exhaustive. Be humble and find rest for your heart. Reject Satan’s yoke and take the yoke of Christ; it is easy and light. We are created in God’s image; let us strive to be like him in all things.
Let us pray
Father, have mercy and forgive us for our sins. Help us, O Holy Spirit, to desire the things of heaven and overcome the burdens of this world. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
