HOMILY FOR FRIDAY: THE FIFTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

The Sabbath

ISAIAH 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8; PSALM 38; MATTHEW 12:1-8

In Matthew 12:1–8, Jesus confronts the Pharisees who accuse His disciples of breaking the Sabbath. He argues that the Sabbath was meant to be a day of rest, recharge, and focus on God, not a burden.

We often forget the Sabbath’s purpose, forgetting Jesus as the Lord of the Sabbath and offering rest and redemption. Let’s rediscover the Sabbath’s true meaning.

In modern times, the concept of rest has become more flexible, as some Christians may choose to observe the “sabbath”  in a more personal and individualised way. In any case, let’s pray, nourish our souls, and reflect on our spiritual journey.

The first reading tells the story of King Hezekiah’s illness and recovery. Hezekiah prays to God and is granted 15 more years of life. We can pray in our struggles; God’s answers can be more than just a simple “yes” or “no,”  but a “yes” and a revelation of His larger plan.

Let us pray

Almighty Father, let your light so penetrate our minds that, walking in your commandments, we may always follow you, our leader and guide. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
