HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY THE TWENTY-FIFTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II

The Apostolic Mission

Proverbs 30:5-9, Psalm 119, Luke 9:1-6

Today’s gospel (Luke 9:1-6) recalls Jesus’ commissioning of the Twelve Apostles, tasking them to preach, heal, and deliver. This enduring mandate underscores the ongoing need for us to proclaim the truth, bring healing, and free souls from ignorance and sin. Beloved, are we authentic preachers, compassionate healers, and courageous liberators?

Again, Jesus’ words to the Apostles remain timely: ‘Take nothing for the journey’ (Luke 9:3). This directive serves as a poignant reminder that materialism poses a significant obstacle to authentic apostolic ministry. For this reason, many ministers have compromised apostolic values.

Therefore, the first reading (Proverbs 30:5–9) cautions against both poverty and excessive wealth, recognising that either extreme can distract us from our faith.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, may we embody the apostolic spirit and give witness to Christ in all times and places. Amen.
