Understanding the Times: A Call to Spiritual Discernment
Ephesians 4:1-6, Psalm 23, Luke 12:54-59
In today’s Gospel, Jesus poses a profound question: “You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?” (Luke 12:56). Jesus is not merely criticizing the crowd’s ability to forecast the weather, but rather their failure to recognize Him as the long-awaited Messiah.
The ability to discern the times is crucial in living for Christ and serving Him in our daily lives. The sons of Issachar understood the times (1 Chronicles 12:32), while Jesus rebuked His people for their lack of discernment (Luke 12:54-59). Similarly, Paul urges us to be mindful of the hour, reminding us that our salvation draws nearer with each passing day (Romans 13:11-14).
However, we risk becoming adept at reading only physical signs, neglecting spiritual indicators. We diligently maintain our physical lives – replacing oil, balancing budgets and diets – yet overlook the need to revitalize our spiritual well-being.
Beloved, we must cultivate the ability to comprehend current circumstances, recognizing opportunities for repentance and growth in holiness. As Paul exhorts, “Live a life worthy of the calling you have received… ” (Ephesians 4:1-3).
Prayer
Oh Holy Spirit, guide our actions and bring our conduct under Your divine influence. Grant us discernment to understand the times and embody Christ in all aspects of life. Amen.
