REPENTANCE: A CALL TO AUTHENTIC CONVERSION
Today’s Gospel reading from Luke 13:1-9 presents us with a stark reminder: “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” These words of Jesus Christ emphasize the urgency of authentic conversion. It is not merely a superficial transformation, but a profound change of heart and direction.
The incidents mentioned in the Gospel – the slaughter of Galileans by Pilate’s soldiers and the tragic collapse of the tower – underscore the fragility of human life. We are constantly reminded of our mortality through daily reports of death tolls and tragic events.
However, it is crucial to recognize that the victims of such incidents were not necessarily worse sinners than others. Rather, their untimely deaths serve as a warning to us all, emphasizing the importance of repentance.
In his letter to the Ephesians (4:7-16), St. Paul reminds us that each member of the Body of Christ has a unique role to play in spreading the Gospel. Our distinct responsibilities are intertwined, working together for the salvation of all.
