LOVE: THE HEART OF THE KINGDOM
Deuteronomy 6:2-6; Psalm 18; Hebrews 7:23-28; Mark 12:28-34
Today’s readings converge on a profound message: love is the cornerstone of our faith. Moses’ words in Deuteronomy 6:2-6 and Jesus’ reaffirmation in Mark 12:28-34 emphasize the primacy of love. Love is not only a commandment but a condition for salvation.
As Christians, our vocation is to love. Jesus declares that loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving our neighbors as ourselves, is the greatest commandment. This love surpasses all rituals and sacrifices.
However, our actions often belie our profession. We prioritize prosperity and favor over obedience to God’s commandments. We want to enjoy divine promises without fulfilling the conditions. Moses reminds us that keeping God’s commandments is crucial for His favor, longevity, and abundance.
The love commanded by Moses and Jesus encompasses four dimensions:
1. Heart: Intimacy with God, a personal relationship.
2. Soul: Longing for God, His works, and His kingdom.
3. Mind: Loving God in our thoughts and intellect.
4. Neighbors: Loving those we see, as a manifestation of our love for God.
Scripture warns, “If anyone says, ‘I love God’ but hates his brother, he is a liar” (1 John 4:20-21). Genuine love begins with those around us.
The absence of love perpetuates evil and suffering. Love is the measure of our service. Christianity is the practice of love. As Jesus says, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35).
Let us examine our relationship with this commandment. Do we love God with all our being? Do we love our neighbors selflessly?
Let us pray
Lord Jesus, may we embody the love that defines our faith, transforming our lives and the world around us.
