HOMILY FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

 IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

Genesis 3:9-15, 20/ Psalm 98:1-4/Ephesians 1:3-6, 11-12/Luke 1:26-38

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This doctrine, solemnly defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854, affirms Mary’s conception free from original sin. This privilege stems from God’s divine plan, choosing Mary as the Mother of our Savior.

As St. Paul reminds us in Ephesians, God chose us in Jesus Christ to be His people before the foundations of the world. Mary’s Immaculate Conception expressly explains this fundamental plan of God.

Luke 1:26-38 recounts the Annunciation, where Angel Gabriel addresses Mary as “highly favoured” (Luke 1:28). Mary’s life exemplifies divine favour. That she was conceived without stains of sin, clearly shows this favour and Divine privilege that was granted to her.

Mary’s privileged state didn’t lead to complacency. Unlike her, we often take our faith, gifts, privileges and sacraments for granted. This Advent, let us strive to be better versions of ourselves.

Let us pray:

O God, who prepared a worthy dwelling for Your Son through Mary’s Immaculate Conception, grant us purification and admission to Your presence through her intercession. Amen.
