Embracing God’s Plan

Jeremiah 23:5-8; Psalm 72; Matthew 1:18-24

Today’s readings remind us of God’s unwavering plan to redeem humanity. In Jeremiah 23:5-8, we hear the prophet’s assurance that a descendant of King David will reign as the true king, a prophecy fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

The Gospel of Matthew (1:18-24) sheds light on the pivotal role of Joseph, Mary’s husband, in embracing God’s plan. Despite the initial shock and uncertainty surrounding Mary’s pregnancy, Joseph’s obedience and faith ultimately led him to align with God’s will.

As we reflect on this narrative, we are invited to examine our own attitude towards God’s teachings, particularly on sensitive topics like divorce. Joseph’s example encourages us to obey God’s will, even when it challenges our own understanding or desires.

As we journey through Advent, let us pray for the courage to embrace God’s plan, even when it requires us to venture into the unknown.

Prayer

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we, who are weighed down from of old by slavery beneath the yoke of sin, may be set free by the newness of the long-awaited Nativity of your Only Begotten Son. Who lives and reigns with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
