Zechariah’s song
2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8-12, 14, 16; Psalm 88; Luke 1:67-79
As we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist, we reflect on Zechariah’s beautiful song of praise, the Benedictus. This powerful expression of faith and gratitude highlights God’s promise to save His people.
Zechariah’s song reminds us that God’s promise is still valid today, assuring us that He will deliver us from darkness and evil. The song also proclaims God’s message of salvation, provides comfort, hope, and joy; fosters unity and worship; and serves as a tool for evangelisation and outreach.
As we sing Zechariah’s song and other hymns, we are reminded of the importance of music in our worship. In Colossians 3:16 we are encouraged to “sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in our hearts to God.” Such overwhelming gratitude eliminates depression and anxiety.
Prayer
Come quickly, we pray, Lord Jesus, and do not delay, that those who trust in your compassion may find solace and relief in your coming. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
