HOMILY FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C

SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD

NEH.8:2-4A5-6,8-10/ 1COR.12:12-30/ LUKE1:1-4;4:14-21

Today, we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of the Word of God. This Sunday was initiated by Pope Francis on September 30th, 2019. It is a day to reflect on the importance of Scripture in our daily lives. The motto chosen by Pope Francis for this year’s celebration is “I hope in your Word” (Psalm 119). This cry of hope reminds us that God’s Word is alive and active, guiding us through life’s challenges and uncertainties.

As we reflect on the lessons from Luke 1:1-4 and Luke 4:14-21, we are reminded of the importance of accurate documentation. In our lives, accurate documentation is crucial for effective communication, transparency, and accountability. For instance, accurate records of births, deaths, marriages, and landed properties help us build a healthy society. Similarly, in the church, accurate documentation of sacraments, such as baptisms and weddings, helps us maintain a clear record of our spiritual journey. Moreover, accurate minutes of church meetings and decisions enable us to track our progress, make informed decisions, and ensure continuity in our ministries. By prioritizing accurate documentation, we can build trust, promote collaboration, and strengthen our foundation.

The Gospel also highlights the importance of eyewitness testimony. This plays a vital role in building trust in our society. Eyewitness accounts can help resolve disputes, provide critical information in times of crisis, and share stories of our achievements. Similarly, in our church, eyewitness testimony of faith experiences, miracles, and transformations can inspire and encourage others, fostering a sense of growth and shared faith. By sharing our personal experiences and eyewitness accounts, we can strengthen our bonds and build a more vibrant and revived church.

Furthermore, the Gospel reminds us of the vital role of the Holy Spirit’s inspiration in our lives. In our church, the Holy Spirit’s inspiration can ignite our worship, inform our preaching, and empower our ministries, helping us share the Good News with others and build a vibrant church.

As we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of the Word of God, let us remember the power of Scripture to guide us, comfort us, and challenge us. Let us make a commitment to deepen our understanding of God’s Word, pray with Scripture, and share its message with others. In today’s Gospel, Jesus invites us to preach (Luke 4:18-19). What are we doing about this today?

Nehemiah 8:2-4A, 5-6, 8-10 (First reading) teaches us to prioritize scripture, community sharing, and joy in worship. We should approach God’s word with reverence, humility, and a willingness to learn and grow, and worship should be a joyful and celebratory experience. The Catholic liturgy captures this experience. Let’s be more ardent and remain steadfast. Don’t make caricature of the Word of God.

May God bless us and guide us as we seek to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

LET US PRAY

O God, who anointed Jesus Christ with the power of the Holy Spirit, anoint us also, that we may serve others with love and compassion. Give us the courage to persevere in the face of challenges and obstacles, and help us be faithful servants, just like Jesus. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
