The Cost of Truth
Today, we have the narrative of the death of John the Baptist. He was beheaded by Herod because he confronted Herod with the truth. We may silence a person, but no matter how hard we try, we cannot silence the truth.
Herod’s actions were rash. As Christians, we must avoid making rash promises or giving rash judgments. He was excited and he spoke from that temperament. Let’s guide when we are excited or angry.
The first reading reminds us of the importance of hospitality and caring for one another. Our faith is not just about personal relationships with God, but also about how we treat others. Just as John the Baptist spoke truth to power, we are called to speak truth and show love to those around us.
Let us pray:
Grant us, Lord our God, that we may honor you with all our minds and love everyone in truth of heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
