HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY THE SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I

The Gradual Restoration of Spiritual Sight

Gen. 8:6-13, 20-22; Ps. 116; Mk. 8:22-26

Mark 8:22-26 presents to us the gradual restoration of the sight of a blind man at Bethsaida. This miracle is not just a physical healing but also a spiritual one. It explains our spiritual journey and the gradual process of conversion that we undergo.

At first, the man sees people as trees walking, indicating a partial understanding and perception of reality. It is only after Jesus lays His hands on him again that the man’s sight is fully restored. Similarly, as we journey through life, we often start with a limited understanding of God’s plan and purpose for us. But as we continue to walk with Him, listening to His word and allowing Him to touch our hearts, we attain clarity of purpose and meaning.

Again, the first reading (Genesis 8:6-13, 20-22) reminds us of the story of Noah and the flood. After the flood, Noah releases a dove, a raven, and a swallow to determine if the waters have receded. The dove returns with an olive branch, indicating that the floodwaters have indeed receded and new life is possible.

In the same way, as we navigate the challenges of life, we need to be attentive to the signs of God’s presence and guidance. We need to be like the dove, carrying the olive branch of hope and peace and announcing the possibility of new life in Christ.

prayer:

Lord, we pray that you would restore our physical and spiritual sight, gradually revealing your truth and guidance to us. Amen.
