I Peter 4:7b-11, Psalm 96:1-2a, 2b-3, 7-8a, 9-10ac, Luke 5:1-11
Today’s gospel reading highlights the true missionary spirit of Jesus. He moves from the synagogue to the lakeside, catching souls and preaching to those who need to hear His message. As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate this spirit by leaving our comfort zones and reaching out to those who are lost.
St. Patrick, whose feast day we celebrate today, is a shining example of this missionary spirit. Despite being enslaved in Ireland, he returned to the land to evangelize and spread the faith. His efforts led to the growth of many vocations and the establishment of churches throughout the country.
As the patron saint of Ireland, Australia, Nigeria, and Montserrat, St. Patrick’s legacy extends far beyond Ireland. According to legend, he chased snakes out of Ireland during a 40-day fast, symbolizing his faith and resilience. Although research suggests that snakes never actually inhabited the Emerald Isle, this story remains an integral part of his legacy.
The impact of St. Patrick’s missionary work can be seen in the many Irish missionaries who came to Nigeria in the 17th and 19th centuries. They established schools and spread the faith, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to shape the Church in Nigeria today. Notable examples include Bishop Shanahan, Bishop Patrick Kelly, and Bishop Margetric.
As we celebrate St. Patrick’s feast day, we pray that his intercession will inspire us to develop a true missionary spirit. May we be willing to leave our comfort zones and share the Gospel with those around us.
Prayer
St. Patrick, patron saint of Nigeria, pray for us. May we be inspired by your missionary spirit and may we always be willing to share the Gospel with those around us. Amen.
