HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF THE FOURTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR II (MEMORIAL OF ST. BENEDICT, ABBOT- JULY 11,2020)

Isaiah 6:1-8, Psalm 93 Matthew 10:24-33

The Gospel further prepares our minds on what it means to face persecution. Jesus says in the gospel, “do not be afraid”. Fear is one of the most popular weapons the enemy uses against the children of God. Fear can overwhelm us with a thick shadow of darkness, controlling every move and decision we make. Again, Jesus says “a disciple is not above is teacher, nor a slave above his master.” Therefore, “if they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they malign those of his household!” We should not be discouraged when men persecute us or say all sorts of things against us, they had called him Beelzebub. But then, are we ‘Beelzebub?’ Jesus says “nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known”. Therefore, do not be afraid when you suffer persecutions simply because you have been mistagged by people. In God’s time, the truth shall be revealed. Precisely because of this, St. Benedict whose memorial we celebrate today told the monks about the “Restraint of Speech” apart from the esteem this has for silence it equally saves us from useless talks, gossips, lies and mislabeling of people. St. Benedict, pray for us.

A PRAYER TO SAINT BENEDICT FOR PROTECTION

Dear Saint Benedict, I thank God for showering you with His grace to love Him above all else and to establish a monastic rule that has helped so many of His children live full and holy lives. Through the cross of Jesus Christ, I ask you to please intercede that God might protect me, my loved ones, my home, property, possessions, and workplace today and always by your holy blessing, that we may never be separated from Jesus, Mary, and the company of all the blessed. Through your intercession may we be delivered from temptation, spiritual oppression, physical ills, and disease. Protect us from drug and alcohol abuse, impurity and immorality, objectionable companions, and negative attitudes. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
