HOMILY FOR THE  FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD (AUGUST, 6TH 2020)

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; Psalm 97; 2Peter 1:16-19; Matthew 17:1-9

The basic theme in our reflection today is the word “Transfiguration”. It comes from the Latin roots ‘trans’ (across) and ‘figura’  (form, shape). It thus signifies a change of form or shape. This is what happened to Jesus in the Transfiguration. His clothes became dazzling white and his appearance changed. The first reading mentions white robes as the clothes of God – and so, given a background to the transfiguration it says that the son of man comes from above while the unnamed beast comes from below.  In the second reading, Peter recalls the voice from heaven affirming Jesus to be the Son of God. Beloved, Jesus is the Son of God let us listen to him. This was exactly the instruction that the disciples were given on that mountain top in the gospel reading. Thus, let us listen to him and enter into the glory which awaits us. The Transfiguration also calls us to be serious with our prayers. In prayer Jesus was transfigured; whenever we truly pray we are also transfigured. Again, the Transfiguration took place at the mountain top; climbing of mountains requires a lot of determination and endurance. Therefore, we are to remain determined as we climb the mountains of life. Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. Lastly, the Transfiguration is a call to dwell in God’s presence. Peter said’ “It is good for us to be here.” God’s presence remains unmatched; in his presence we are empowered and strengthened just as the disciples were strengthened in anticipation of the Lord’s Passion. Lord Jesus keep us true so that we may not be disfigured. Amen

PRAYER FOR OVERCOMING LIFE’S HARDSHIPS

O Lord, we call upon You in our time of sorrow, That You give us the strength and will to bear our heavy burdens, until we can again feel the warmth and love of Your divine compassion. Be mindful of us and have mercy on us while we struggle to comprehend life’s hardships. Keep us ever in Your watch, till we can walk again with light hearts and renewed spirits.
