HOMILY FOR MONDAY THE TWENTHIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1 (16/8/2021)

Judges 2:11-19/PSALM 106/Matthew19:16-22

It is dangerous for christians to be attached to the world. Distance from God is one of the dangers of such attachment. We see this in the life of the Israelites. They took God for granted and invested their energy in the worship of Baal and Ashtaroth (Pagan idols). They so loved the world that they disregarded God and formed alliances with these gods. The gospel reading continued with a similar theme. The rich man who came to Jesus demonstrated that he loved wealth, riches and possessions more than he loved God. So, when he was asked to pratice charity and selflessness he went away sad. Beloved, the vocation of a christian is a call to love God above all things. What do you contend with? Are you sad when you are called to give? What are the pleasures, attachments and possesions you wouldn’t let go? To win eternal prize, we must let go and let God.

LET US PRAY

Father, give us the grace to value your love, kindness and gifts above the pleasures of this world. Through the Holy Spirit may we love you more than the world. Give us strength to overcome the trials of this new week and help us to previal over the dominion of darkness and ancestral forces through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
