HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY THE SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (18/1/2023)

STRETCH OUT YOUR HAND

Hebrews 7:1-3,15-17/Psalm 109/

Mark 3:1-6

In the Gospel, Jesus miraculously restored a withered hand. The Scribes and Pharisees rose against him because of Sabbath’s protocols and structures. For Jesus, every law must give expression to love and compassion. No genuine law is against love and care. Without love we cannot care for those with disabilities. The law of love is the greatest commandment. Do we keep the ‘law of love’?

“Stretch out your hand” don’t feel embarrassed by how other people perceive you. Jesus might want to bless you first in a certain undesirable area of your life. Again, the restoration of the withered hand is a clear justification that our hands have been released. Therefore, let us stretch out our hands to love and care for the needy and disabled. Stretch out your hand and work for the good of the society. Stretch out your hand and begin to do something don’t stay idle.

The first reading adds; “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Heb 7:1-3; 15-17). This reading encourages us to pray for the thousands of people who were ordained as “priests for forever,” but who have abandoned their vocation for some reasons. The priesthood’s charism still exists in them as an unrealized but not forgotten potential that frequently causes them pain. May they remain close to the Lord. As people of God, let’s stretch out our hands and be of help to one another.

LET US PRAY

Shed your clear light on our hearts, Lord, so that walking continually in the way of your commandments we may never be deceived or misled. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
