HOMILY FOR MONDAY THE THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR I (23/1/ 2023)

Blasphemy in the Kingdom

 Hebrews 9:15,24-28/Psalm 97:1-6/Mark 3:22-30

Some teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul! Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: “… people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the deliberate, blind-sided denigration of the work of the Spirit and the imputing of what was unquestionably divine to the devil. These individuals recognized that Jesus worked his miracles via the power of the Spirit and had witnessed as clearly as anyone could have seen it yet denied it.

To blaspheme is to speak with disrespect about God. Blasphemy is verbal or written rebuke of God’s name, character, work, or attributes. It is the lack of reverence for sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or sacrosanct. Promulgating false doctrine and leading God’s people astray is blasphemous. Jesus says; “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot last.”

LET US PRAY

Father, have mercy and save us. Through Jesus Christ your Son teach us the ways of the saints and by the power of the Holy Spirit may we overcome all obstacles and trials. Amen.
