HOMILY FOR FRIDAY THE FIFTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME  (10/2/2023)

Care for the disabled

GENESIS 3:1-8; PSALM 31; MARK 7:31-37

The Gospel says “they brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay his hand on him.” Those that brought the deaf and dumb man to Jesus represent those who truly care for people with disabilities.

How often do we care for those with disabilities? We know their temperaments most times we still go all the way to frustrate them. The disabled in the gospel reading was shown love. Love and care can enable the disabled. Where there is love and care; miracles abound.

In Genesis we are told that the serpent made Adam and Eve to disobey God. This was the beginning of original sin. Beyond this, man has equally fallen for the serpent of the day. Rom.3:23 says “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. Sin is a disability in our faith and spiritual life. Therefore, as in today’s psalm let us acknowledge our sins and ask for God’s forgiveness. Let us beg Jesus to heal us so that we can hear God’s word and keep his commandment.

May St. Scholastica whose memorial we celebrate today intercede for us.

LET US PRAY

Almighty father, unblock our ears that we may listen to your word. Open our hearts that we may grow in sensitivity to the plight of others. Release our tongues so that we may speak in gratitude of your loving kindness. Amen.
