HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE ELEVENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

TREASURES IN HEAVEN

2 CORINTHIANS 11:18, 21-30; PSALM 34; MATTHEW 6:19-23

Jesus says “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matt. 6:20). Jesus linked this command to the desire of our hearts: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:21). There are a lot of things vying for your heart, as this is the control center for life. We need to watch over and guard our hearts to prevent being drawn away by worldly things.

Beloved, we must learn to avoid obsessive accumulation and treasure Jesus the most. When Jesus is our treasure, we will commit our resources (money, time and talents) to His work. Friends, let us seek the kingdom of God first, live a simple life, take risks that honour God and help the poor.

These features were seen in the life of St. Paul in the first reading yet he expressed his weakness which demonstrates his absolute dependence on Christ. Therefore, to ‘store up treasure for yourselves in heaven’ is to depend on Christ. Paul’s greatest treasure was Christ. Who is your treasure?

LET US PRAY

My Jesus, I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul and to be with you forever. Amen.
