HOMILY FOR THURSDAY THE THIRTEENTH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME

FORGIVENESS AND HEALING

GENESIS 22:1-19; PSALM 114; MATTHEW 9:1-8

In the Gospel, Jesus manifested the power of forgiveness and healing in the life of the paralytic. This stands to explain how the sacrament of penance equally brings about healing. In fact, the sacraments of penance and anointing of the sick are regarded as the sacrament of healing. Whenever our sins are forgiven we are equally healed spiritually. The world needs forgiveness and healing. Let us continue to teach forgiveness and healing to the world rather pouring out prophecies that breed malice, division and hatred.

The first reading reminds us not give up in the face of trials – especially when we are tempted to compromise our loyalty towards God. Abraham remained steadfast and obedient despite the gravity of the sacrifice he was asked to make. Thus, the Lord says: “Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore.” (Hen 22:16-17). Beloved, God is always with us, he will surely provide for us if we remain willing, obedient and steadfast.

LET US PRAY

O God, who through the grace of adoption chose us to be children of light, grant, we pray, that we may not be wrapped in the darkness of error but always be seen to stand in the bright light of truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
