HOMILY FOR THURSDAY OF THE 15TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

GOD’S DIVINE ATTRIBUTE

EXODUS 3:13-20; PSALM 105; MATTHEW 11:28-30

God revealed his name to Moses as “I Am who I Am.” This name means that God is ever present. It is similar to the New Testament expression in Revelation 1:8, “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.’” The name conveys the thought that God is ever present; to save, help, deliver, redeem and bless his people. Whenever we call God “I Am who I Am” we are reenacting these attributes and suddenly become confident of his saving power.

Similarly, in the Gospel Jesus expressed other Divine attributes; gentleness and humility. He says; “learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart”. He went further to say, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matt 11 : 28). Another attribute of God is rest. Genesis 2:2 says “On the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.”

Some of us are burdened because of work, others because of pride; while there are those doing everything possible to cover up their evil deeds; it’s neurotic and exhaustive. Be humble and find rest for your heart. Reject Satan’s yoke and take the yoke of Christ, it is easy and light. We are created in God’s image, let us strive to be like him in all things.

LET US PRAY

Father, have mercy and forgive us our sins. Help us, O Holy Spirit to desire the things of heaven and overcome the burdens of this world. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
