STAY AWAKE
1 THESSALONIANS 3:7-13; PSALM 90; MATTHEW 24:42-51
We are so familiar with the phrase “stay awake” that we don’t even bother to contemplate the reality that it communicates. Like a familiar alarm, we easily press the snooze button and keep sleeping. Many Christians are still sleeping despite the alarming sound of salvation today.
Observing this recklessness, Jesus said to his disciples, “Stay awake, because you do not know the day when your master is coming. The divine plan that Christ might come at an hour we do not expect leaves many of us nervous. If a date is slated, many people will plan their lives accordingly, even though a good number of people will still be caught unaware.
End-time truth demands proper preparation, not anxiety. Christ’s return is an exciting expectation rather than a catastrophe. Therefore, let us increase our affection for one another as we eagerly anticipate the return of our Lord Jesus Christ, just as St. Paul exalts the Thessalonians in the first reading (1 Thess. 3:7–13).
PRAYER
Almighty, ever-living God, we make our prayer to you at morning, noon, and evening: dispel every darkness from our hearts and homes and bring us to the true light, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
