SAINTS MICHAEL, GABRIEL AND RAPHAEL (ARCHANGELS)
DANIEL 7:9-10, 13-14 PSALM 138; JOHN 1:47-51
Angels are messengers of God; they appear frequently in Scripture. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael had important roles in the history of salvation. Jesus described them in the gospel as those who dwell in the Lord’s presence and act as his messengers.
Saint Michael is the “Prince of the Heavenly Host,” the leader of all the angels. Michael means “Who is like God?” He stood against Lucifer when he rebelled against God. Michael appears in Daniel’s vision as “the great prince” who defends Israel against her enemies; he is invoked for protection against Satan and evil.
Saint Gabriel is well known in the Scriptures, especially in the narrative of Jesus’ birth. His name means “God’s strength.” In Luke 1:19, he identified himself and his office; he says, “I am Gabriel, who stands before God.” Gabriel appeared in Daniel’s visions, announcing Michael’s role in God’s plan. He represents good news and spiritual strength. He strengthened Jesus during his agony in the garden of Gethsemane.
Saint Raphael identified himself in Tobit 12:15; he says, “I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord.” His name means “God has healed.” He healed Tobias of his blindness. Thus, he is the angel of divine healing and acts of mercy.
Many people in the Bible succeeded because they trusted and believed in God’s messengers, beloved. How much faith do you have in God’s holy messengers?
LET US PRAY
O God, who dispose in marvelous order ministries both angelic and human, graciously grant that our life on earth may be defended by those who watch over us as they minister perpetually to you in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
