CHRIST’S MESSAGE
Baruch 1:15-22; Psalm 78; Luke 10:13–16
In the Gospel, Jesus lamented over the people and regions that did not accept his message despite the miracles they witnessed (Luke 10:13). To whom much is given, more is expected. The cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum received much but repented little.
It’s a very big puzzle how some people frustrate divine graces or opportunities for salvation. For instance, Capernaum, Jesus’ adoptive hometown during His Galilean ministry, was exalted to heaven, yet its residents refused to turn from their sin. In the same vein, many of us are aware of the benefits of receiving the sacrament of confession, yet we choose not to.
On the day of judgment, Jesus declared that it would be more tolerable for some than for others. This suggests that on that day, some will be judged worse than others. Those who knew but were neglectful will face the worst consequences.
Jesus concludes by saying, “He who hears you hears me; he who rejects you rejects me; and he who rejects me rejects Him who sent me” (Luke 10:16). Jesus was sent by God, and those who reject him or his messengers ultimately reject God himself. Are you willing to accept his message and live by it?
The first reading tells us that the people suffered not as a result of God’s punishment but as a result of their sins. Much of our own pain and misfortunes can be traced to our own misbehavior, individually or corporately. We often suffer from negligence and regard it as a spiritual attack.
LET US PRAY
Father, we thank you for this day. By the power of the Holy Spirit, help us to overcome our limitations and grant us your salvation through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
