WARNINGS AND ENCOURAGEMENTS
Romans 4:1–8; Psalm 31; Luke 12:1–7
Jesus says, “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.” The point was that the doctrines of the Pharisees were pervasive and would lead to hypocrisy and atheism. So Jesus warns us against every bad influence that would erode our faith and harm our relationship with God.
Again, He says, “Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known.” Jesus explains that all of our secrets will eventually be made public and uncovered. Therefore, we must immediately make peace with God and ask for his pardon. Instead of the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, which hides the truth, disciples should be sincere.
Then He encourages us, saying, “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that, you can do no more.” These are words of encouragement in the days of trials and persecutions. Proverbs 29:25 “The fear of man is a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is set securely on high.”
Lastly, Jesus says, “The hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Jesus used sparrows as an example of the love of God. The very hairs on each of our heads have been counted because God loves each of us so deeply. Let us love God with our words and deeds too.
Let us pray
Father, help us to heed your warnings, strengthen us by the Holy Spirit, and grant us your salvation through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen!
