HOMILY FOR WEDNESDAY, THE TWENTY-NINTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR 1

BE READY

Romans 6:12–18; Psalm 123; Luke 12:39–48

“You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.” Many of us are anxious about the divine plan that Christ will come at an hour we do not expect. Many people will prepare their lives properly if a date is set, even though a significant proportion of people will still be caught off guard. Beloved, it’s an unexpected hour; it calls for absolute readiness.

The end-time reality calls for careful preparation rather than worry. Christ’s return is something to look forward to with delight. Christ’s coming is not a catastrophe but rather a cause for celebration. Don’t be anxious; sustain a worthy life.

Paul says in the first reading that we must not let the ability to sin reign in our lives. We must resist the ways of the world and stand ready. Jesus says, “Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives.” Such a servant shall be granted inheritance and placed in charge of his master’s possession.

Lastly, He says, “But if that slave says to himself, “My master is delayed in coming”, and if he begins to do otherwise, he will definitely be caught unawares. Delay can cause attention to wander. It may equally result in annoyance and a lack of concentration. We may be tempted to be carefree and careless. Time is eternal; you can’t waste time; you can only waste yourself. Make judicious use of the time you have now. Heaven is a prepared place for prepared people. Be ready!

Let us pray.

Father, in your goodness and mercy, grant us the grace we need to overcome darkness and embrace your light. The Holy Spirit casts away our fears and fills us with hope through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
